On March 11, 2025, the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist militant group, launched a brazen attack on the Jaffar Express in Balochistan, Pakistan. The train, carrying nearly 500 passengers, was traveling from Quetta to Peshawar when militants detonated explosives on the tracks, forcing it to a stop inside a tunnel. A fierce gun battle ensued between the BLA and security forces, leading to casualties among passengers and security personnel.

BLA’s Demands and Hostage Situation

The militants took 214 hostages, including military and police personnel, and issued a 24-hour ultimatum, demanding the release of Baloch political prisoners. They warned of executing hostages if their demands were not met.

Rescue Operation Underway

By March 12, Pakistani security forces had managed to rescue 155 passengers, though dozens remain captive. The ongoing operation faces significant challenges, as reports indicate that some BLA operatives are armed with suicide vests.

The Bigger Picture: BLA’s Struggle

The BLA has a long history of targeting Pakistani security forces and infrastructure, claiming that the government is exploiting Balochistan’s natural resources without benefiting its people. This attack is the latest escalation in their insurgency, highlighting the deep-rooted tensions in the region.

Authorities continue their efforts to secure the safe release of the remaining hostages, while the crisis unfolds with grave implications for security and stability in Balochistan.
