On February 24, 2025, marking the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the United Kingdom announced a new wave of sanctions targeting individuals with close ties to the Kremlin. These measures aim to intensify pressure on Russian elites who have supported President Vladimir Putin’s war efforts.
Expanded Sanctions Criteria
The UK government has broadened its sanctions framework to include individuals who provide substantial support to the Russian state or have acquired wealth through their connections to it. This encompasses senior politicians, business figures, and those with significant access to Russian government operations. Security Minister Dan Jarvis emphasized the UK’s commitment to denying these individuals entry, stating that those exploiting Russian resources to fund aggression are not welcome.
